Liquid Persuasion: The Art of Ink
Exploring the chronology of ink through an immersive experience
The site for the exhibit is located in one of the abandoned lager tunnels found underneath the city of Cincinnati. Mass immigration to the city began in the 1830s when, before long, millions of gallons of beer were being produced in these underground cellars. Beer empires rose up and prospered until Prohibition forced them to close in the 1920s.
Concept Design
Exploring the chronology of ink through an immersive experience
This exhibit was inspired by the fluidity of Richard Serra’s sculpture and the idea of an interactive sculpture inspired by the Heian Shrine Wishing Tree by Yoko Ono.
An interactive tree sculpture anchors this space where visitors can write wishes or notes on pieces of paper and then affix them to the tree. A second main moment of this space is an ink waterfall. This waterfall of ink changes colors based upon levers that are pulled by visitors. The ink can be used to write the notes that go on the tree. Visitors are guided throughout the space to these two main moments via curved walls inspired by Richard Serra.
